The Samba Percussion Course is an intensive workshop designed to train students in the fundamentals of samba percussion, drawing on Samba New York!'s original arrangements and the styles of some of Rio's top samba schools. There is no other course like this one being offered in New York City!
In September, we will start to prepare for our appearance in the 2008 Greenwich Village Halloween Parade. Even if you have never played an instrument before in your life, join us for this Course, and you may just find yourself performing with Samba New York! in the world's largest Halloween celebration!
The classes will be based on the following structure, which is subject to change as needed:
Segment One: Samba Skills (7:00 - 8:00 PM)
The first hour will be dedicated to mastering basic techniques on the instruments of the Bateria; playing with Brazilian swing; and exploring various styles and breaks from Rio de Janeiro's samba schools. Students will work within the samba-enredo song structure and will be encouraged to gain experience on more than one instrument. The class may also learn several other Brazilian rhythms such as marcha, samba-reggae, baião, and maracatu.
Segment Two: Bateria Performance (8:00 - 9:00 PM)
The second hour will serve as preparation for performances of the Samba New York! Bateria. Bateria members will work on perfecting their performance skills, while newer students will learn the Bateria's repertoire. All participants will be expected to focus on one instrument during this segment.
Both segments are available to all students.
To register for the Course, send us an email with your name, telephone number, and any experience with samba percussion. Please specify whether you would like to register for the entire course or individual classes.
The course fee is due in full at the first class. The course fee and individual class fees are nonrefundable. Any class in the course that may have to be canceled by the instructor will be rescheduled with a make-up class. Dedicated students in the course may eventually be able to perform live with the Samba New York! Bateria in parades and other events throughout the New York area.
